A reproduction of St. Michael battling the devil by Durer: scrimshaw on Ivory

This is an example of my scrimshaw, engraving on ivory,which I did for thirteen years as a full time job! My work appears in Sailors and Whaling Museums on the East Coast and in many private collections. Because ivory is such a "touchy subject" these days, I no longer do full tusks. I use only antique or fossil ivory. This particular tusk is worth $7,000.00 very few artists can wrap around a picture on a curved surface or reproduce Albrecht Durer's work!

Painted Totem Skulls

My painted skulls are in the style and spiritual understanding of Native American religions. The Native Americans venerated the dead animal by making it live again by painting the skull, especially the Buffalo skull. The red rings around the eye represent light entering in again. The "hail spots" represent the water of life and the energy of the storm as does lightning. The spirit of the animal world is emblazoned on the head and red for breath and blood painted inside the nostrils. Because the people depended upon the animals for life, they never took a life without asking that the life be reborn in the earth.!
